Graduates sometimes complain that employers will only consider applicants for a fitness instructor job if they have prior experience of the role. This is true of some employers, but not all. Employers, who have perhaps just lost an experienced member of staff, may specify in the job description that previous experience is essential so that the new employee can fit into the role more quickly. However, a large number of employers are eager to recruit graduates with no experience and are happy to invest time and resources shaping and molding them to fit the needs of their business, rather than recruiting an experienced staff member who often comes with preconceived ideas of how things should be done.
A fitness instructor internship with us provides you with up to 100 hours of work experience at our Liverpool Training Academy. Here you will put into practice the skills you have learnt on your course in a busy health club environment, training real clients in real situations. There will be training logs and self development tasks to complete along the way, and best of all you get to put this real work experience on your CV. On completion of the fitness instructor internship, there is the real possibility that the best candidates, the ones who show real potential, will be offered a permanent salaried job working for the health club. Since the start of the internship program in 2006, the health club has employed over 15 members of staff in various roles from fitness instructor, personal trainer, sales and marketing advisors, general managers and aerobics instructors.
Internships are not for everybody. You may feel you do not need one because your previous experience or life skills are sufficient.
